Three-Year-Old's Temper Tantrums

Are rage episodes "normal" behavior for a three-year-old? What causes them, and what can be done?

I am so encouraged by your advice. It is true that toddlers are scared of their rage, I see it in my 3 year old when his tantrums go to far.

a woman wrote a very good question about how to cope with 3 year old RAGE tantrums... what was your response... go out and buy a book. We need advice NOW. This is a very important stage and it is scary when truly good children "flip a switch" and go into these rage type tantrums seemingly for nothing. We need to help them out of it. We need to know what to do NOW. Of course, if we are looking on the internet we are truly trying to get help. Telling us to go out and spend money and buy a book and read it is not an immediate solution, which is what we need.

I needed immediate help for potty training my granddaughter. I really didn't know how to accomplish it. This lady on the internet, who DOES sell her system, simply explained it to me. It worked in 4 days. I went on-line afterwards and paid for the system even though I never downloaded it. I no longer needed it... she gave it to me for free. I wanted to reward her, so I paid the money anyway. This is what we need, immediate response.

My 3 year old boy has just started fighting bed time in the last couple months. He has always been a GREAT sleeper. We transitioned him from crib to bed with no problem, and we've kept his bedtime routine the same since he was an infant. Yet, suddenly, he refuses to go to bed. And, really, what can we do? We close the door, he opens it, and walks right out. I know sitting or laying with him is a bad idea, but, what else do we do? What has caused this suddent change? HELP?

my daughter will be three in april and she has the worst temper in the world she hits and shouts at me if i tell her off.i feel like discaplining her makes the situation worse.i am exspecting my second child and would love to be able to control my three year before my baby is born.any suggestions would be gratly appreciated

I do think temper tantrums are normal. Just like "gama" commented on...we as parents dont need to go out and read a book..We dont have the time to run to the book store let alone sit and read a book. I am going through the same with my 3 year old daughter. It is hard and scary for me and my little girl. I can see the fear in her at times. I have found that if I give her 2 choices. Change your clothes or the tv goes off, or If everything is going well that morning I'll tell her we have to get dresses in 5 minutes not now, but soon ok...When I came back to her(most days) she is ready for me. As a parent it is frustrating to see our sweet little child turn in to such a bad horrible kid. We just have to stay strong and be consistant, even when it is hard. Sometime what works today might not work the next. And what works for one child wont for the other. good luck

I am so glad I found this! My 3 yr old daughter also has terrible tantrums when it comes to getting dressed, however it does not happen every day. Often she is fine after I have struggled to get her to put her clothes on, and is calm again, like a different child!
It's nice to know it's relatively normal for a 3 yr old.

I would like to share a wonderful article I found about Temper Tantrums and How to Stop Them in Their Tracks. The first thing to keep in mind is that your child’s temper tantrums are not directed personally at you.

When do the tantrums end? Do they ever stop? My son looks at me as if he wants to see me dead one minute, then a few minutes later can be sweet as pie- sounds like the posts that I read... But if my son doesn't learn to control the rage now, I worry that he might grow up to be a "monster." He's going to be a very tall guy and if he is already able to hurt me physically, I feel like if I don't get a handle on this while he's real young, he'll just push me out of his way to get what he wants when he's older regardless of the consequences.- Any suggestions will be appreciated. He is also an only child...

Sometimes, my kids have temper tantrums. My son Aidan who has autism he has the worst temper tantrums ever!
Even Olivia has worst temper tantrums too. When she tried eating different foods, she'll smell it before she eats it. When she liked it, she'll eat it. When she doesn't, I ask her too and she cries and she just spits on it and dumps it on the floor.

When it's bedtime, she wails and I just carry her up. In the middle of the night, probably around 1:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m. she cries so loudly she wakes up Matthew in the next room.
Soon, she learned to eat different foods withour spitting or dumping and going to bed regularly, she was normal, a little bit though.

My son is 3 and has had "rage" tantrums for the past four months. They happen daily and he completely loses control. He gets red in the face, clinches his teeth, growls and screams, kicks and hits, and can't be reasoned with or consoled. It can go on for up to two hours at times. He could "lose it" over even minor things like wearing or not wearing a shirt he wants. We have tried everything from isolation, to being stern, to even reasoning with him (although that is a ridiculous idea with a toddler). You see, we are borderline desperate. He does not have these episodes away from us. Our parents have seen it occasionally when they come over, and they seem stunned and mention how they have never seen this before (both my parents and my in-laws). Daycare has not even had a glimpse of it. Basically, we look like bad parents who don't know how to raise our child. Anyway, is this "level" of rage way above the other "rage" episodes people experience?
