AC wiring: Black - 'Hot' White - 'Neutral' These two carry AC power to a junction box or switch. GREEN - 'Ground' gives electricity somewhere to go in case there is a short. Also necessary for GFI protectors to sense a problem. RED - This is used for the 'hot' lead from a switch to a fixture. It is 'hot' when the switch is on.
