I have to agree with the previous commenter. As long as you eat healthfully, it is no problem to be vegetarian while pregnant or nursing (it worked for me and I have two healthy children).

It seems to me as though this "article" is not only to be written by someone non-educated on nutrition, but also a person who seems to be completely ignoring the millions of women that choose to get pregnant and follow the typical American diet who are not ever questioned about their nutritional deficiency's (as if we haven't noticed our nations' terrible eating habits). While it may be true that some vegetarian and vegan mothers to be may have inadequate nutrition during pregnancy, I would venture to guess that you will see many pregnant omnivores scarfing down an extra value meal at McDonald's or the plethora of other terrible chain restaurants which offer a pregnant or nursing women little to no nutritional value. I run across many pregnant women in the grocery store as well, with their carts full of doritos,sugary snacks, Hungry Man dinners and other processed and hydrogenated nightmares as well. I would venture to say that perhaps people such as the author of this article should be criticizing ALL pregnant women's diets..not just the diets of those that the author clearly does not understand. Time and time again it has been proven and, one fine example is from the American Dietetic Association (http://www.dietitians.ca/news/downloads/vegetarian_position_paper_2003.pdf)
that a vegan or vegetarian diet is perfectly safe and in fact beneficial to a pregnant or lactating women. That is of course, if the person is eating a healthy, balanced diet...as is the case with any women , meat eater or not.
