Stepparents and Discipline

Read tips on how to effectively discipline your stepchildren -- without overstepping boundaries.
20 year old step daughter moving back in
My Step daughter left home here in AZ when she was 18 to start college in Michigan. She was in the top 10% in HS and Drill Seargent of the ROTC. Did very well and a very proud Step Father I am. She came in my life when she was about 10. Beleive me my parental duties was a challenge, still is. I did most of the disciplining while she was growing up, even though I was a beaten child growing up, that would never happen in my house, not even close. I better not see at the neighbors either. Anyway, what I think I did wrong was I never lived up to what the discipline was. Example: "Now your not allowed to watch TV for two weeks" then two days later she is watching TV again. There was an immediate forgiving response so I forgave her. But this was typical for everything when trying to discipline. Now she is 20 and doing more disrespectful things and at a hire calliber, now I really don't have time for this, my privacy is gone once it was restored when she left, and now she thinks she can run over me with this sympathetic responses, now coupled with hostile or agressive behavior she will use if I don't give in. She is not the same person she was when she left. She failed at school, got with the wrong crowd, got obsessed with there culture, and now smokes dope, and actually beleives it does no harm...... I can go on and on with this new life she brought back home. Its easy to see she got a taste of freedom and now failed misserably. Now it appears that I'm taking up her space when she is here and it bothers her that she don't have her privacy like she did in Michigan. I don't have any of my own kids, so I dedicated much of my time with my Step Daughter. Her Mother is just happy to have her daughter back home. Don't care about nothing else. once things start to settle I do expect that to change. It's so bad with her right now, and I thought I would never say this, but I want her out of here if I don't see changes real soon.
