I think its great to set reasonable expectations. After my daughter was born I joked that it wasn't too much to think she would be an astronoaut, doctor, and US President. But more realistically, I came up with 8 of my true hopes and expectations for my daughter. Thought you and your readers would enjoy. http://middleclasskeith.blogspot.com/2011/08/expectations-for-your-child...

It's true that we shouldn't be setting reasonable goals for our child and not expecting too much from them. Usually when this is the case, our kids tend to loose their identity and become unhappy in the process. It's nice to be guiding our kids as they grow up and instilling the same interests that you'd hope they will love doing. But we can never be sure that that's the one true thing that they'd want to pursue as they become adolescents and eventually, adults. Our kids are different from us so it's important to support them with whatever interests them but not expecting too much with anything they choose to do. If we do otherwise, then expect our kids to become possibly troubled teens in the future. Here's a relevant article for parents who ended up having troubled teens.
