Our daughter is 18 yrs old and was just diagnosed January 2009 with Asperger's High Func NOS-PDD. All I could say at the time was "FINALLY!" I cried because all the time was lost - we could have had more intervention/better intervention. Starting very young, we went to many behavioral therapist. She had few friends; NEVER got invited to parties. I felt so bad for her. She was diagnosed with ADHD at 5 years old - meds didn't help. We made her play sports-(now @ varsity level) we made her get involved- we made her do things she didn't feel comfortable doing (but of course, we were there for her). So, now she goes to group therapy with kids her age. I also want to point out that I told her, guess what? She was relieved too -because now she knows why. Tell your child - they need to know. If you can't communicate, how will they?
