The Risks of Repeating a Grade

Learn why repeating a grade isn't always the best solution for an under-achieving child.
29 Year Old StepSon
My husband's son has finally moved out. He does not work and relies on us to pay his rent, groceries etc. My husband has him over every Sunday but will not discuss why his son does not get a job. His son has not been working since Oct 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!

Retaining in 3rd Grade
There were links to retaining Kindergarten, first and fourth grades, but what happened to second and third? I am considering retaining my 8 year old daughter (DOB: 8/13/00). I am struggling with this decision because she is in the same grade as her cousin, is finally fitting in socially, but has a lot of trouble with reading and spelling. And, she's beginning to have trouble with math - her favorite subject. Her spelling and reading are the most difficult for her. We've talked about her being retained for a couple of years and it seemed to spark her into working harder for a while, but I don't want to keep talking about it any more. My sister teaches high school and her daughter is in the same grade as mine. She suggested I call a meeting to include all of the teachers who have worked with Jenny, and include the principal. My heart is really pulled in several directions. Please offer any suggestions.
