Grandparent Wants to Homeschool Rather Than Medicate Child

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, however, each state has different requirements. Learn how to find out more about your state.
Homeschooling ADHD child
I am an adult with ADHD and have lived with this condition all my life. ADHD is surrounded by a great deal of fear and denial which clouds peoples ability to deal with it effectively. People think the problem with ADHD is the inability to pay attention in school causing bad grades and bad behaviors. ADHD causes relationship issues and has the most dramatic affect on the persons life. Growing up with no friends, living life alone, struggling to stay employed. With No Child Left Behind and FAPE, your grandson is in a position to get the treatment and attention he needs to function in today's world. I know you believe that medicating the child is the worst thing you can possibly do, but it is not the worst. If you homeschool your grandson you will may improve his grades, while depriving him of his chance to succeed.
Reasons TO Medicate
We adopted 4 ADD ADHD children and at first I too had this ideal that we could handle things just fine without medications (for them, not us :) ) however even though we homeschool we've been educated on the medication and why it's needed.
Their meds allow them to FOCUS and CONCENTRATE! Without them they were prone to destructive behaviors such as not looking both ways before crossing a street, unsafe bike riding and risky behaviors way beyond their capabilities.
Having your grandson evaluated by a "competent" medical person is your first step. There are several tests (I prefer the TOVA)that will tell if he is truely ADHD or simply high-spirited. If he IS ADHD and needs meds now that doesn't mean it's a lifelong sentence. It will merely give him the confidance to finish a project and stay focused long enough to learn without being disruptive to himself and those around him. Good luck.
