Is Fast ForWord Program Worth the Expense?

FastForward is worth the cost!
It works. I have a 20-year-old daughter who completed the program at the end of 4th grade. When she returned to school EVERY teacher wanted to know what I had done. She was changed from Special Education (since K) to consult. Her reading went from below grade level to at grade level in one month. You may not experience that kind of gain but it is worth it.
My daughter has since graduated from High School and is in her 3rd year of college. My nephew, who did the program at about the same time as my daughter, is also in his third year of college. They both have had to work hard for what they have achieved but fastforward made it possible. It won't be a perfect fix but one that allows the child to manage and show there true intelligence.
Also I have a younger nephew and neice who have done the program. The problems are genetic in our families case (my brother struggled) but fastforward helped make the difference for the children of three sisters.
FastforWord works
FastforWord is an excellent program. At first I was doubtful but it's a lot more effective then simply memorizing material.

Fast ForWord
My son was diagnosed with an Auditory Processing issue in Kindergarten. He was tested by an Audiologist and some severe deficits were identified. The recommendations by the Audiologist were weekly speech therapy sessions and Earobics. He began seeing a Speech Therapist and we purchased Earobics. We both found Earobic boring and not very helpful. I did a lot of research and discovered the Fast ForWord program. I found a provider that set us up at home. We had no problems with our computer crashing -- the program worked very well on our home computer. The Speech Therapist was very support of this program. He began this program the summer between 1st and 2nd grade. He finished it before entering 2nd grade. I had him re-tested at the Audiologist in the fall. All of the deficits identifed in the previous year were gone! The Speech Therapist discharged him. He is doing very well in 2nd grade. He just entered the 4th quarter. I think the combination of the weekly speech therapy visits and Fast ForWord helped him greatly. It was expensive but I think it was worth the money.

Benefits of FastForWord
Having worked as a speech/language pathologist in the public school system for many years, I've used Earobics and see it as a good program. However, in comparison to Fast ForWord, it's very limited. FF is designed to rewire the brain through intensive, frequent, adaptive programming.Any program that is designed to do that is going to cost something (as does Linda Mood Bell, another excellent program). Check on the Scientific Learning site to read research re:users' experiences (I know one might think the results listed are just individuals paid to say good things, but they are real.) I've done pre- and post- language testing for many individuals who have made significant progress after using the Fast ForWord program.

Fast ForWord -- worth the expense
Fast ForWord is a very powerful program squeezed into a home PC software package and so it does stress out some computers with insufficient memory or processing speed. But these days most computers can handle it fine. Re the expense. Yes it is expensive, but in many many cases it can change a life -- provide confidence, reading comfort, attention stamina, big life changing things for a struggling kid and the famliy. Earobics is OK but it is not adaptive and so it does not challenge and exercise the brain's auditory processing system the way Fast ForWord does. It's best for younger ones, under five, that are generally too young for Fast ForWord.

FastForWord
My son did FastForWord. My comments are--you should do the program in an office because the program keeps crashing. The provider's staff is responsible for keeping the computer going. If the computer crashes and the information from that day does not get transmitted to California, Scientific Learning scores that day as a 0--and it counts toward your days.
FastForWord does not allow for flexibility. If you pass 4 areas but need to work on 1, you must play all 5 games each day. Suggest Earobics instead. A $70 program which covers much of the same material with all the flexibility you need. www.earobics.com Did it cure the APD--no, but it helped.
