Son with LD, ADD Doesn't Care That He's Failing

A parent wonders what she can do to help her 15-year-old son, who has LD and ADD and doesn't care that he is failing.

My 9-year old son is having a hard time staying focused at school. This has been a problem for the last year. We have did some testing with him and started him on medicine that only made him very tired, stomach ache, didn't want to eat so we put him on a lower dose which didn't seem to make much difference so I stoped giving it to him. Well her we are today with repeated notes for the teacher he's not focused, distracted very easy. He had to do state test the last two days and did poorly not that he can't do them he is very smart, but just can't slow down and focus on one thing at one time. I'm not one for medicine, but we are at are ends of what to do.

Yes, respectfully this can be a problem, finding what motivates a person that is. As an adult with ADHD and parent of a son with dyslexia I have lived through some of the frustration of keeping myself and my son motivated. Discovery of what this young man's brain naturally is inclined toward (art, music, sports, social, math?) and establishing reinforcing rewards and concequences in that direction may help. Perhaps take a look at my website Ortando.com for ways of understanding. take care
