I too have a very talented son who struggles with spelling. He has amazing high grades, but can't spell very well at all. The only thing I found to help him is taking a spelling list and working on that list until he masters all of the words. This works, but is very time consuming. It took him a month to be able to spell the word very right every time. I hope someone can figure out how to help these kids.

My gifted 12-year-old also has problems with spelling. He has been tested and has been diagnosed with a learning disability. He has an IEP and has been given the accommodations mentioned. That's fine for school. But what about other venues where there is no spell-check? My son just started posting on facebook and his friends are commenting on his terrible spelling. Is there anything else that can be done for these kids if they just can't retain spelling of words?

I just left an appointment with my daughters guidance counselor and four of her teachers. She is an eighth grader that also has a great GPA. The school has had her tested but because she is an outstanding reader there is nothing else they can do for her. A neuropsychologist is not covered by insurance in our area.The cost is over $1500 and we do not have that kind of money. I don't even have a car. Both parents are in school and I'm out of work at this time. I don't know where to go for help and the school isn't really working with us. They have not had to deal with a problem like this before.
