Top Ways to Get Your Kids to Read

Here's how you can make reading a part of your kids everyday lives.

Hey all,
I have a daughter and one on the way, and have worked in a Daycare/Preschool and took some classes in Early Childhood Education, and this is a question I've heard A LOT, especially now with video games and computer and TV and I came across this WONDERFUL book....

raisingbookworms.com

it is written by Emma Walton Hamilton (daughter of Julie Andrews) and she gives tips, fun games and activities, and all kinds of really great information on how to get your kids to LOVE reading and to continue reading.

And best of all....shes a mom of 2!! So...she has experience! I think this will help out a lot...check it out :O)

I had tons of problems getting my 3 children to read - they seemed frustrated and as a homeschoolers - I tried everything!! I ended up buying a book and CD on tape combo and IT WORKED MIRACLES!!! I bought a book called The Book of Funtastic Adventures (www.funtasypublications.com) because they could relate to it and were interested in the stories about Star Wars, Never Never Land, Narnia, etc. Hope my suggestion helps!

I was really struggling with my two boys (ages 8 and 10), who spent too much time on video games. I set up a system whereby they had to earn video game time by reading, AND ONLY READING. They had to log their reading time (and info about their books) onto a website I created for them, and after I validated it, they earned TV and video time credits. My idea evolved a lot since then, and the website has turned into a fun, online community for kids (and their friends!) where they earn various types of rewards by reading. It has really helped my two boys, and they are now reading for the pure enjoyment of it. Hurray!!!
Anyone is welcome to use the website, it is easy, free and fun! http://www.reading-rewards.com

As an elementary and middle school teacher I have found that the best thing to do, to motivate your children to read is to do a fun activity with your children that will excite your children into reading. My favorite is to grow a TickleMe Plant, while reading the TickleMe Plant Book along with my kids. The TickleMe Plant is the only plant that children of all ages can interact with, as it will close its leaves and lower its branches when tickled. The kids are so excited about growing and doing activities with their TickleMe Plant, that they then want to read more about information and activities they can explore with their TickleMe Plant. Just search TickleMe Plant to find the TickleMe Plant Book and a greenhouse kit to grow your own plant.
