Get Ready to Read! Overview

The Get Ready to Read! screening tool will show whether your child's pre-reading skills are weak, strong, or somewhere in between. Activities and resources are provided to improve reading skills.

It is important to know that all children learn at their own pace. If your child is identified as "weak" don't panic. Get your child's vision or hearing tested by her pediatrician. As a reading specialist, I uncover at least one undiagnosed vision or hearing problem a year. The important thing is not to undermine your child's confidence. Children live up to their labels. If you label your child at the age of four as a "weak reader" she may begin to think of herself that way and possibly live up to that label. It is important to praise her for what she can do. It is also important to think positively. Your positive attitude will be passed to your child. Continue to monitor the situation, but don't dwell on it.
