Bag of Tricks: Bully Prevention AwarenessDid you know that this week is National Bullying Awareness Prevention week? Even if your child hasn't reported any bullying problems at school, I think this week is still a great time to talk with your children about friendship, kindness, and the importance of reporting bullying of any kind to teachers, staff and parents. So often we aren't motivated into action until something affects us personally; I'm guilty of this as a parent myself. September 2, 2009
Bag of Tricks: The Back to School EditionNow that I've wrestled with all the angst and emotions of turning forty, I can turn my mind to all things practical. Things like how to teach a nine-year old to pick his clothes up off the floor, or to not clog the toilet with too much toilet paper; things like getting your five-year old to pick out her outfit the night before, so precious minutes each morning aren't wasted in fashion negotiations; things like getting an almost air-tight organizational system into place so we can hit the ground running every Monday morning and make it through the week.

Bag of Tricks: Summer Boredom BustersIt felt like a LONG week last week--and I'm sure it felt even longer to L., and to T., who found herself alone for most of the day with her parents for an entire week. If truth be told, it also felt a little long for me, because while I love spending time with T., there are only so many hours of the day I can devote to playing ponies, or sick fairies, or tea party before I feel like locking myself in the bathroom for five minutes of me time. Bag of Tricks: The Pool Safety EditionI'm sorry to start the week with a sobering post, but this topic has been on my mind for a few days now. Last week a five-year old boy drowned at a local, private, neighborhood pool. It wasn't our pool, thankfully, but a pool very nearby. The day after this happened I took T. to a birthday party and two of the moms there had been at the pool the afternoon of the drowning. They were ashen-faced still, and sad--marked in that way you are when you have to see something as terrible as a small body taken out of a swimming pool on a sunny summer afternoon.

Bag of Tricks: the test-taking editionI had a pretty brutal weekend grading papers all weekend long (and weekend nights), with the exception of a few glimmering moments here and there--our Derby Day celebration, a fun play-date at our house on Sunday with a new friend, some gardening with T. But most of the weekend was spent grading. I wore out a path from the kitchen table to the office because every five seconds I had to pop up, rush over to the computer, and run google searches to catch plagiarists in action. April 20, 2009
Bag of Tricks: The Swimsuit EditionBack in July last summer I went swimsuit shopping and it was a complete disaster. Part of the problem was that waiting until July to buy a swimsuit leaves you with hardly any choices to pick from--except, of course all the suits that no one else wanted to buy. And it's hard enough to find the right swimsuit without having to select from all the sad, rejected suits that looked bad on everyone else. This year I vowed would be different. March 13, 2009
On the road againThe kids and I are hitting the road on Saturday--well, hitting the train tracks, actually. We're headed to the D.C. area to visit with my family. Yet again, Scott's Spring Break didn't coincide with ours, so he'll stay home with the pets and his pile of grading. I'll take mine with me (the grading, not the pets), and I'm looking forward to a stretch of a few days to sit, visit with my family, and watch my kids play with their cousins. March 10, 2009
Bag of tricks: The college survival editionMy students are in the throes of midterm exams this week. Whenever I watch my students bent over their papers, I feel a surge of protective, maternal concern for them--even for those students who taxed my patience in the weeks leading up to exam week. But my heart always goes out to them when they're taking tests. They seem more like the children they were (or are?) when they're chewing on their pencil ends, or staring off into space for the answers, or feverishly writing--pouring out all the stored-up knowledge onto paper. Bag of tricks: the (special needs) holiday survival editionEver since Scott and I got married, we have traveled back home for the Christmas holiday. We used to travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but once we became parents, traveling for two back-to-back holidays became pretty unmanageable. In the old, pre-kid days, and even in the days when L. was very small, we used to travel home at Christmas for a long block of days, and spread ourselves thin over family visits (both our families live in the same area--and for those of you who think this might make things easier, trust me, it does NOT). Bag of tricks: the giving editionI'm knee-deep in final exams this week. Last night I was up until 11:45 calculating grades, and when I went to bed and closed my eyes, I saw small numbers and percentages and class participation points, instead of visions of sugar plums. This is the time of the semester when I get a type of tunnel vision: All I want to do is make it through the next exam, the next batch of exam grading, and the next set of calculations. At the other end of it all is Christmas, a tantalizing and magical oasis shimmering in front of me, my favorite time of the year.
