Photo finish

There’s a Junie B. Jones book that begins with Picture Day at Junie B.’s school. She’s horrified that the photographer snaps her picture just as she’s squeezing one eye shut and making a horrible face. The picture is so bad, that poor Junie B. hides it under her bed to scare the monsters away.

Tuesday's Tip

I like learning new things in the kitchen; new techniques, new recipes and new cuisines. I am usually up for a good challenge, but when it came to learning how to do yeast dough, I almost gave up.

For the longest time I think I allowed my intimidation with the temperatures and science behind yeast stop me from just diving in and trying new recipes. But then along came the idea of making my own pizza dough, and I just *had* to learn.

Gingered Pear Crisp

As the fall bake-a-thon continues in the Sweet Pea Kitchen, I’ve been trying to keep things light. Not that I am opposed to a good decadent dessert, it is just if I didn’t have some good light and healthy baked goods up my sleeve, we’d all be needing some new, bigger clothes.

So it was a fun challenge last week to create something tasty, yet light, when we had some unexpected visit from my brother last week. He flew in from California and so a lot of the Ohio family dropped in on a week night for some dessert and conversation.

In the pantry I had some:

Ready...set...bento!

I came home from an outing with T. on Wednesday to discover our bento boxes had arrived! I'd spent the week before convincing Scott that bento boxes were going to change our lives--or, at least, help us help L. change his school lunch habits (which mainly include sitting in his seat at the cafeteria and leaving his lunchbox unopened on the table in front of him).

T. was very excited to get her box. It's pink, of course.

Manna from neighbors

On Saturday we returned home from an afternoon out and about and found a huge bag of corn waiting by our front door. Although there was no name attached, we knew the corn had come from our neighbors diagonal to us. We've also, in the past, been the lucky recipients of vine-ripened tomatoes, knobbly homegrown cucumbers, and the odd green pepper or two.

Quick fix

Some evenings, after the kids have been tucked into bed and Scott and I are settling in for some quality grown-up time in front of the TV, I'll find myself suddenly craving something...something sweet, something to top off a day well spent (or not well spent--sometimes dessert is the best remedy for a frazzling day); something sweet to savor, maybe with a glass of wine on a weekend evening. Usually what I crave and what I have waiting in the pantry are not one in the same. We don't keep a lot of sweets on hand. We don't tend to buy boxed cookies or keep candy in the house.

Peachy

A very good friend of mine flew in from Rochester, New York yesterday to spend a long weekend with us. I haven't seen her since 2001, when Scott and I packed up 12-month old L., the cat, houseplants, suitcases, and a high chair into our old Dodge minivan and drove south, leaving behind those graduate school days, and too many friendships. The other day I looked through an old photo album, trying to find some pictures of this friend to show the kids. I was looking for one in particular: in it my friend J. is sitting on our old couch, holding a tiny, brand-new L. in her arms.

Divided we stand

I don't know how you other parents of multiple children are faring with the kids at home this summer, but my kids are getting on each other's nerves. Their range of interests are ever widening as they both get older (a problem I think lots of parents with one child of each gender faces) and T. is getting less and less patient with her brother's controlling ways, and more and more physical when it comes to asserting her rights.

Coming clean

Sunday was a grumpy day for all of us. It poured icy rain all day long. The kids alternately moped around, pestered us (play with me! play with me!-Or-I'm bored! I'm bored!), or fought and bickered about every minute thing possible (She breathed on me! He touched my arm!). We had family visiting for the weekend, and when they sped off on Sunday morning, in a whirlwind, we were left to pick up the pieces of two kids grappling with a healthy case of post-visit, post-spoiling, cabin-fever-induced, flat-out grouchiness.

"I survived Birthday Week"

I survived birthday week.

Barely.

As I type, my folks are driving home, my in-laws are at Columbus airport awaiting their departure, and SPH and R are at R’s swim lesson. G is napping, and the house is quiet. I am basking in the quiet.

This week had a few ups and downs that I will spare you, but overall it went great, and now I can proudly say I have a two-year-old and a five-year-old, something I couldn’t say a mere eight days ago.
