Torture memos releasedAmericans love to argue, don't we? There's no issue, political or cultural, about which serious, well-intentioned observers will not resort to calling their opponents nincompoops and other less pleasant epithets. We've gotten to see this dynamic in action again over the past week, thanks to the Obama administration's decision to release some previously classified memos about the United States' treatment of incarcerated terror suspects.

President Obama... now what? Were you one of the 60% of Americans who watched Barack Obama's inauguration live? Maybe you watched it on TV, or streamed it over the Internet. Maybe you were one of the millions who traveled to Washington, DC to witness history in person. No matter where you were, it was a day none of us will soon forget. But now that the pageantry is behind us, what happens next?

The inaugurationDudley Square was quiet. The everyday pan-handlers, drug dealers, and addicts weren't on their everyday corner, loitering in front of Dunkin' Donuts. One could hear the streets' silence; few cars passed.

Last night was historic!Obama’s speech energized me. I felt a physical rush travel through my body. In awe, I watched as he embraced his wife and daughters. In wonder, I kept telling myself, “He won, he won!” Yes we can, yes we can, yes we can! As the camera slowly swept over the crowd in Grant Park, I saw hope and possibility in the eyes of the people. With excitement, I fell to sleep. November 4, 2008
Election dayToday felt like summer. Or maybe it’s that today was Election Day. The warm air brought out many people. The entire day was a matter of choice and selection for me. I stood in my closet this morning, deciding on what to wear. I chose my grey pinstripe slacks with a grey collar shirt and grey v-necked sweater and hat. I stood behind a dais this morning and selected what I will share with the room full of wealthy white women about my black (Afro-American tales). I chose to park my car at a meter for two hours and got a 25 dollar ticket. October 15, 2008
My sonIn the late afternoon my son and I were walking into our lobby, and there was a voter’s registration table with red, white, and blue balloons floating above the table. What got Baby Danny’s attention was the bowl of lollipops. “What is this table for?” he asked. “To vote,” I said. “Vote for what?” he asked. “The president,” I said. “Oh, you mean I can vote for Barack Obama,” he said with enthusiasm. I was soon in the elevator and Baby Danny entered with an elderly white woman. Her hair was cut short, and her glasses sat on the tip of her nose, like a schoolteacher's. |
