Top Ten, Er, 150 List

There are a lot of food books out there. Traditional cookbooks, diet missives, food lifestyle guides and more flood the shelves of bookstores and libraries.

So it is rare that I find a food book that piques my interest enough to thoroughly peruse it, and even rarer that I get excited enough about the book that I want to recommend it. And yet, a book my Mother-in-Law shared with me did just that; in fact, it got me so excited I found myself sharing random facts about the antioxidants in horseradish to others. It takes a lot to get me talking about horseradish.

All things toothsome

T.'s loose tooth is still hanging in there--practically by a thread. Since its appearance we have had many conversations about teeth, and the tooth fairy, and I used her loose tooth as a chance to pull out my own tooth-related anecdotes from when I was a girl, because that's part of your job as a parent, isn't it? To pass onto your children those stories from your own childhood, even if they make them squirm?

Have bubbles, will travel (even if by armchair)

It was only fitting that yesterday we came home from a morning of end-of-summer-like activities (meet-the-teacher event for L., and a work meeting for me) to find a package awaiting us. A dear family friend has a yearly tradition of sending us a "Christmas in July" package. This year we unwrapped the mysterious brown parcel to find this:

Books, books, books!

For the better part of last year I've been hoarding books. I don't tend to buy my books from a bookstore, unless a new book I am dying to read and/or just must get my hands on (like these guilty pleasures, for instance) comes out and then I have to head to the store pronto.

Books About Mom

The concept of Mother's Day is a hard one to grasp for toddlers, but that doesn't mean they can't celebrate by sharing a good book about moms with someone they love.

The books I am featuring today are all favorites at our house. When we talk about mommies, these are the ones that I grab first. So this weekend I hope you have a chance to cuddle up with a little person and share some books about moms.

Writing a book...do I have what it takes?

Writing a book seems to be on everyone's "To Do" list, but something that most people never do. Sure, talking about writing a book sounds like a great idea. But actually sitting down and committing to it? Thats an entirely different story.

Writing is something that has always come fairly easy to me, and unlike many of my peers, I enjoy doing. And, just like everyone else, writing a best-seller is on my "To Do" list. It's always been a thought that was floating around in my head, but lately I've been thinking very seriously about it. I just have one problem- I have no idea where to start!

Reading history

Whenever we travel anywhere I always like to seek out relevant books in advance for my kids to read—it’s the teacher in me. Or the book-lover in me, who knows. I do know that when you read about a place in the context of a book or picture book and then visit the place, it becomes all that more real to you. For years and years I've wanted to visit Maine because of my love for the Robert McCloskey books.

Twilight series 'sucked' me in

As much as I loathe being herded to and from work by bus and train with hundreds of strangers, I also look forward to it every day. I enjoy this time for several reason; I love to plug into my iPod, zone out, and become completely absorbed in a book.

I recently jumped on the bandwagon and started reading the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. The series consists of four books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.

Dear Diary

L. is all over these books lately. He asked for books one and two for Christmas and I gladly obliged. He rarely expresses any interest in books that are "fiction" and not detailed guides to his latest obsession (in this case aviation). But I had noticed in the weeks leading up to the holiday break that almost all the kids in his class were buying the books at the Scholastic book fair and toting around copies of them, laughing at the jokes, and swapping "how far have you read?" challenges. When L.

Soft house

One of T.'s current favorite books is this one, by children's book author Jane Yolen. The book is about the powers of the imagination, and about how two innovative kids take a boring, dreary, rainy day and make it magical by building a huge "soft house" out of blankets and quilts.
