Cold Weather, Hot PretzelsSo here we are, in the last week of February. I can take a lot of snow in December, January and February. Heck, to me, snow in the winter is the “way things should be,” and par for the course living in Ohio. But as we enter into near-March territory, I start itching for Spring. But with the weather still firmly stuck in a winter mode, I wanted to share one of our family’s favorite activities to do when it’s snowy and cold outside.

Food on a stickWith the warmer weather comes fair, festival and carnival season, and with it, a whole array of carnival foods. I am not sure what happens when one attends a festival, but suddenly things that we would not otherwise eat suddenly become staple foods. Elephant ears, funnel cakes, corn dogs, and the like grace most outdoor celebrations.

Penny CraftOne of my challenges this summer is to keep R, who will be entering kindergarten in the autumn, occupied. He no longer naps and with school out for the summer, this not-very-crafty/creative mom has needed all the help she can get with ideas for he and I to do between playing outside (which he does a lot, but even big kids need a little down time too). I am extremely thankful for resources to help me channel my inner crafter, which reminds me, have you checked out the Craftivity Blog on this website? It rocks! June 3, 2009
Food MemoriesI have a vivid memory of me and my friend Amy K., when we were about five years old, eating orange slices in my parent’s kitchen. At the time, Amy and I thought there was nothing more hilarious than taking the orange slice, rind still attached, and putting it in our mouth and smiling. My mom must have thought it was funny too because she has pictures in a photo album that capture this moment. Pictures of Amy and I, sweetly smiling with huge orange filled smiles and a bit of orange juice dripping down our chins.

No FoolingNow that spring is continuing to show its presence more frequently, I love clearing out the snowman pillow, snowman decoration and anything reflecting winter in our home. Out with the snow, in with the spring, both with the weather and with our home.
I love the look of having dyed Easter Eggs out for decoration, but with hard-boiled eggs, you don’t want to leave them sitting out at room temperature for too long. A friend taught me how to blow-out eggs a long time ago, and it has become a tradition (most years) for me to dye some blown-out eggs to have as decorations in the spring.

Brown paper bag piratesAs much as I adore the time when the boys want to help in the kitchen, there are times, and tasks, that warrant a little independent culinary time. I gladly accept the challenge of a child who wants to be more involved; it simply isn’t always feasible to have R or G next to me when I am, say, using the mandoline or frying something over high heat. What’s a mom to do?
