Monopoly

My family plays Monopoly while I watch. I don’t play anymore. It reminds me too much of life. I’d be the boot; I’d walk in a circle for hours. I’d collect $200 every time I passed Go, but I’d just as quickly land on someone’s property and owe money--debt! Or I’d take a chance and end up in jail. Or I’d pay electricity, hospital and beauty bills, or rent and mortgage. Where is the fun in that?

We wish you an economic holiday

I remember that when I turned 12 years old, my mother announced that we would be celebrating a "grown-up Christmas" from now on. The big Christmas Eve feast was replaced with hors d'oeuvres, the cookies for Santa were forgotten, and other "more mature" modifications were made.

Ten dollars

The value of ten dollars is almost valueless. President Hamilton’s bill is as cent-less as President Washington’s dollar. My daughter invited three young girls from the church in South Africa to our hotel. The resort where we stayed had plenty of fun activities for them. They swam, they bowled, they played miniature golf.

Book learning

My husband and I were up late last night discussing Beverly Cleary's well-known children's book character Ramona Quimby and her family. I should clarify and say that we were up late last night discussing our family budget and, found ourselves instead dissecting the Quimby's household budget. We periodically have these late-night discussions; not the optimal time for discussing family finances, but it’s the only time we can have a conversation that’s not interrupted every five seconds by one or both of the kids.
