The stash

I snuck into my bedroom.

I made sure my sisters weren’t around.

I took the picture off the wall.

I packed away my crack behind a poster framed picture of me rapping.

Looking for somebody who cares

"I don’t feel good. Can I go to the nurse’s office?"
"Yes," said my teacher.

I slowly walked to the nurse’s office, holding the hallway pass, an old piece of wood with the word "Pass" and our homeroom number "102," carved into it. The hallway was hushed and chilly. I knocked on the school nurse’s door.
"Come in," she said.

My burnt arm

There's a scar on my arm…

I sat at the kitchen table. My seven-month-old sister sat on my lap. My mother was in her bedroom with the door closed.

As I poured hot coffee into a foam cup my sister swung her little arms and knocked over the coffee. I quickly lifted her high in the air so she wouldn’t get burnt. But when I brought her back down to my lap, I screamed! The skin on my arm had shriveled up.

Christmas memories

I plugged in the Christmas tree lights, took my Barbie dolls out of an old shoe box, and placed them underneath the tree. I imagined the Christmas lights were those of Times Square on New Year's Eve.

Imagination allowed me to get away from what was real -- another Christmas without presents.

The hidden me…

The secretary stood at the door signaling in slow motion. She pretended to speak, mouthing a phrase.

I guessed, silently mouthing back, "Other?"
"No," she nodded.
She purposely pointed at me.
"You," I guessed.
She shook her head, "Yes."

“Happy Mother's Day”

My husband looked at the caller ID. “It’s your mother.” I grabbed the phone and stared at it. I wasn’t going to answer. I wasn’t going to answer because I knew she wanted to wish me a happy mother’s day.

But something compelled me to pick up.

“Hello.”

“Lia, happy mother’s day,” she said.

I didn’t want to say it back but I did, “Same to you.”

“Are you getting ready for church?”

“Yes,” I replied.

“Enjoy your day,” she said, before hanging up.

Books About Mom

The concept of Mother's Day is a hard one to grasp for toddlers, but that doesn't mean they can't celebrate by sharing a good book about moms with someone they love.

The books I am featuring today are all favorites at our house. When we talk about mommies, these are the ones that I grab first. So this weekend I hope you have a chance to cuddle up with a little person and share some books about moms.

The World's finest chocolate

My son was overjoyed. After school he jumped into the back seat, opened his book bag and pulled out an envelope and said, “Mommy, I am selling candy; do you want to buy some?”

I remembered the World’s finest chocolate bars – caramel, almond and crispy rice. He talked so fast, his words were running over each other. “I am going to knock on doors in our building, I am going to take it to church and sell candy to the Pastor. Mommy, can you take it to work and ask your co-workers to buy some?

“You are not selling any candy,” I said.

“Why?” Lil' Danny asked.

It's Us!

While waiting at a red light, I saw my mother and her boyfriend. I rolled down the window and asked, “Where are you going?” She said, “Did Baby Danny get the $5.00?”

A simple question, but not. Mother, daughter, grandson. Family. Recent emotions and events. Mother and sister fighting. My sisters at war.

Hidden behind the high

I imagine it is easier for my mother to stay in her own world.
