Manna from neighborsOn Saturday we returned home from an afternoon out and about and found a huge bag of corn waiting by our front door. Although there was no name attached, we knew the corn had come from our neighbors diagonal to us. We've also, in the past, been the lucky recipients of vine-ripened tomatoes, knobbly homegrown cucumbers, and the odd green pepper or two. November 24, 2008
Where dreams liveThe much-anticipated neighborhood soap box derby race we were supposed to have on the 15th was rained out and rescheduled for the weekend of December 6th. This Saturday the neighbors organizing the race held a "trial run" for all the eager kids who just can't--absolutely can't--wait another two weeks to race their cars. For a child (and for some parents who labored extensively over the car while battling the stomach flu), a two-week delay is just torture. August 21, 2008
BountifulThe other day T. and I drove through our old neighborhood, past the turn-off to the street our old house used to be on. I felt a tug of nostalgia suddenly, but I'm not sure what for, really. I don't miss the house--I love this house and this new neighborhood, and the friends we've made in the nearly two years we've lived here--but the tug was there, nonetheless, like a homing instinct pulling me down the street. Location, locationWe moved into our current home and neighborhood just over a year ago. We truly love it here, and nothing brings this fact home to me more than when I walk the dog around the now familiar streets and down through the woods and back up again, past the houses lit up at dusk, cozy and warm and inviting. |
