BookwormSometimes I get bogged down by the realization that this past school year for L. feels like such a wash. Really, a big wash. I suppose not every year in a child's school life can be profitable or good, or rewarding (or all three), even for parents who homeschool--sometimes you just get an "off" year. I was talking not long ago with a homeschooling mom and she told me the first 8 months of their foray into it were pretty rough. February 26, 2009
Love lettersOn Tuesday T. and I spent an hour in a waiting room, while L. finished a therapy appointment. Not long after we had sat down, a little floppy-haired boy ran tumbling in, with his dad close behind. The boy was two, his dad told me, and at that wonderful age when everything out of his mouth was a string of unintelligible sounds--no distinct words, but the sounds were clearly recognizable as questions, statements, exclamations. He pointed, he smiled, he gestured in delightful and easily identifiable ways. He was clearly communicating, and thrilled about it all. June 13, 2008
Who was that masked man, anyway?I've written before about how we love the children's books in the CD section of our public library. There are shelves and shelves of CDs from books to listen to. We've graduated (thankfully) from Junie B. Jones and even Ramona, and moved on to real chapter books--ones that run hours in length and can easily occupy L. (and even T.) in the car for days. Listening to books on CD jump-started L.'s interest in reading this year.

Decoding teacher-speakI have a stack of papers to grade this weekend. A large stack. The challenge with grading student writing is, as usual, coming up with just the right words to both encourage the writer to do better but, at the same time, convey my dismay (despair) over the lack of effort put into the assignment. In procrastination mode this afternoon, I'm thinking instead about how much I like to volunteer at my son’s school (they have a very generous open-door policy), and whether or not I can fit in an hour or two there next week. Book learningMy husband and I were up late last night discussing Beverly Cleary's well-known children's book character Ramona Quimby and her family. I should clarify and say that we were up late last night discussing our family budget and, found ourselves instead dissecting the Quimby's household budget. We periodically have these late-night discussions; not the optimal time for discussing family finances, but it’s the only time we can have a conversation that’s not interrupted every five seconds by one or both of the kids. |
