Bag of Tricks: the test-taking editionI had a pretty brutal weekend grading papers all weekend long (and weekend nights), with the exception of a few glimmering moments here and there--our Derby Day celebration, a fun play-date at our house on Sunday with a new friend, some gardening with T. But most of the weekend was spent grading. I wore out a path from the kitchen table to the office because every five seconds I had to pop up, rush over to the computer, and run google searches to catch plagiarists in action. November 7, 2008
BulliesOne of the toughest parts of being a parent is that feeling of helplessness you get when you're trying to smooth the way for your child at school. You can do lots of things to help a very small child: You readily give out hugs and kisses for boo-boos, hold hurting heads steady when they wake up in the middle of the night, sick and vomiting. A hug and a kiss and a cuddle can go a long way toward righting any of the wrongs in a child's world. But from the day L. entered kindergarten, we've had to learn that there are some things we just can't fix. November 6, 2008
Fifteen minutes of fameEarlier this week, we went to our first parent-teacher conference of the year for T. I love preschool parent-teacher conferences, don't you? They are always relaxing, and at T.'s school the teachers pull out their special padded regular chairs, so you don't have to fold your body into a chair made for people about three feet tall. You sit there, in the sunny and cheerful classroom, and hear (usually) nothing but good things: cute anecdotes about how your child is learning her letters, or mastering the art of scissor cutting, or learning to share. Spinning wheelsEvery Monday through Thursday, my cell phone alarm rings promptly at 4:30. This is L.'s "homework alarm" and, although I usually end up having to push the snooze button once or twice, the alarm system has helped make an unpleasant business at least more organized (although still not exactly pleasant). At 4:30 yesterday the alarm went off, and only five minutes later L. disappeared into the office to type out his spelling words. I used the time to engage in what a friend terms "horizontal parenting." This term describes the type of parenting you can do while lying prone on a couch or floor. March 28, 2008
Getting aheadIt's just the perfect day outside today--clear blue skies, warm spring breezes, lots of birds chirping outside my office window. All of this adds up to make this good Friday Feeling even better--what better way to head into the weekend than to have the promise of the continuation of some truly good weather? March 5, 2008
The what-ifsMonday was sunny and warm and T. and I used our hour of alone-time to lounge in the hammock on the back porch. She chattered to me about this and that and I decided, given our free time, that we would work on how she pronounces (or doesn't pronounce, as it happens) certain sounds. She swallows her -ph and -f sounds, and most of her paired consonants, and her -r's usually end up sounding like -w's. I love the way T. speaks; her words come tumbling out of her mouth in a charming, chirpy way, and we're not really concerned about her pronunciation--or at least I didn't think we were. Reality checkI had a long, and involved dream on Saturday night. It was one of those meandering dreams that takes you on a surreal mental journey, through dark and twisty roads, against the backdrop of an unfamiliar and menacing city. I won't go into the details of the dream, but it involved my son, and a parent's worst nightmare, and even though it all worked itself out in the end, when I woke up I still had that heavy-chested feeling you get when you have been run through the emotional wringer for a prolonged period of time. Crafty loveBack in September I signed up to volunteer at T.'s preschool Valentine's Day party and, when the "assignments" were doled out a couple weeks ago, I volunteered to lead the craft. I like to bake and decorate cookies and cupcakes, but I also enjoy doing crafty things as well and would far rather spend my precious time putting together craft items then baking and frosting a dozen cupcakes. Unexpected giftsIt was one of those early mornings; you know, the kind of morning where everything just looks a flat shade of gray, instead of colored and dimensioned as it should be. I woke up with a sore throat, the kids just couldn't get moving, T. threw herself down on the hallway runner, stark-naked, and in full tantrum mode while I raced around trying to pack school lunches, find an outfit for her, find matching socks for myself. I forgot to kiss my husband goodbye and here it is, almost Valentine's Day.

Facing FacebookYesterday a student from last semester stopped by to say hi and chat a bit. Hey! He told me, smiling broadly. I saw you on Facebook the other day! |
