Emmy nominations announced

Yesterday, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 61st annual Emmy Awards. As usual, the Sopranos earned the most nominations, with nods for -- what's that? The Sopranos has been off the air for a couple years? Old habits die hard, I guess. In fact, there were some pleasant surprises on this year's list.

Keeping it real

One day last week I was sitting in the waiting room of T.'s speech therapy place, indulging in a rare few moments of magazine-reading. The magazine I was reading had a huge, splashy picture of Kate of Jon & Kate fame (infamy?) on the front cover, and some provocative headline about their crumbling marriage, or something of that sort. One of the "regulars" there--another mom (there are about five of us regulars who are there, same time, same day, every week.

Summer detox

Last night was the season finale of Lost, and I mentally checked this one off the list and breathed a small sigh of relief. I'm a little sad to see our favorite shows end, one-by-one, for the summer, but I'm actually kind of happy, too. I think our list of shows we follow has gotten unwieldy over the past few months and I'll be glad to trade most of them in for longer evenings on the porch, and dinners at the pool. I tallied up our recent schedule of our nightly TV habit and came up with this:

Sometimes my worlds collide and my professional life in advertising/marketing slams violently against my personal life as a dad. And oftentimes when that happens,it’s a recipe for some kind of commentary. Out with the gold...in with the old

The Olympics are over; our evenings just got a lot duller, and last night, as we watched the closing ceremony, we felt decidedly deflated. August is definitely a dark period in TV watching, and the Olympics were a bright spot shining in the midst of lots of bad reality shows and tired repeats of Law & Order episodes. Plus, everywhere we went, people were talking about the Olympics. On our parenting support group's Yahoo board, people were excited about Michael Phelps.
