Before you buy this season's most popular video game...

If there's a gamer in your house, chances are that a game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is on his Christmas list. Maybe you've even bought it for your young'n already: the game grossed $310 million dollars on its release day, November 10, and earlier this week passed the $550 million mark. But before you wrap it up and put it under the tree, do you know what you're actually buying?

Tanisha Messes with God and Me

She yelled, "Bitch!" just before something slammed into my head, glass shattered all over me, and I hit the ground.

At the time God was new to me. I’d known of Him before but this time was different. This was new. I was new.

"I’m gonna shoot Diamond in her ass.”

Diamond and Crystal were twin sisters. Big, built like men. Old as my mother. Intimidating, and they knew it. And they were crack heads. They bullied people in the projects. They hustled them. They robbed them. And no one did anything about it because they were two BIG bitches.

Thrills

At the time we were having trouble with some other girls.

Kendra and I walked to the community center.
There was a long line for tickets.
We were performing and were supposed to be back stage before the show began.

“Say something positive about me at my funeral.”

This is the last week of our summer program. I asked the boys how they felt about the program ending. They sat silently with their heads hung low.

Check My Resume

Part of our summer program includes hiring a “handyman.” The handyman’s role is to be a liaison between the staff and our program participants. Preferably, the handyman is a former — and reformed — gang member.

Yesterday we interviewed a young man.

He finished my sentences.

I asked, “Why do you want this—”

“Job?” he said.

“What qualifies you to work—”

“With gang members?” he said.

“I’m certified. I’ve been a gunman since my youth.” He paused. “On the streets, my reputation speaks for itself.”

When Kerby is ours

One afternoon in March, Kerby Revellus, 23, stabbed three of his sisters, killing two of them. The third sister, Serafina, survives with nightmares she doesn’t want to talk about.

This story is heartrending. It is a narrative that never should’ve been told, a plot we never should’ve read. This morning, a Boston Globe article sought to explore what may have led to Kerby murdering his two sisters. I wish I could rewrite its end.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. . . and Secondary Trauma

Fifteen black and Latino men sat in a half circle, taking notes as I spoke about the core competencies demanded by street work.

"To build relationships with proven-risk, gang-involved youth, you must fulfill your promise." I thought about the boys, then continued. "If you commit to being involved in their lives, never promise anything you can’t deliver."

I quoted Fredrick Thrasher, the "Godfather of Gang Research."

To Terminate at Will

“Employees-at-will,” the professor said, “What does that term really mean?” The class sat silently. The question was rhetorical, I assumed. “We are going to watch a video,” he said. He pressed play. The video gave examples of employees-at-will principles. Can an employer really terminate you at will? “For any reason, or for no reason at all,” I thought.

Fashion, Art, and Buttons

Fashion is like Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “Sunflowers.”

The painting expresses a characteristic style – “bold use of color and composition.” Likewise, fashion frames one’s persona – clothes, shoes, accessories, hair, and (even) cell phones paint a portrait.

Fashion, like art, varies depending on the artist.
