What is your Obama barometer?President Obama had a big week this week, with two speeches that grabbed a lot of attention and headlines. First, he stirred up a batch of controversy and ruffled some feathers when he directly addressed children and told them to work hard and do their best in school. Obviously a very touchy subject not meant for the President to meddle in. (What? Did I miss something here!?) August 13, 2009
Woman tweets during childbirthYes, you read that right. No, she didn’t have some weird delivery complication or medical condition, she was tweeting, as in, posting on Twitter. You know, that fun little social networking site where you can instantly alert all of your “followers” of your every thought and move (in 140 characters or fewer, of course). And when the tweeter (or eh hem, is it twit?) is none other than Twitter CEO’s wife and baby mama, the tweets were heard ‘round the world.

Blame it on the teething, yeah yeahOnce my baby hit the ripe old age of three months, the mysterious and unpredictable malady of teething was all of a sudden a convenient yet viable diagnosis for any abnormal and/or unpleasant behavior. Excessive drooling, refusal to eat, runny nose, first-thing-in-the-morning fussiness, mid-day fussiness, evening fussiness, middle-of-the night fussiness … you get the idea.
So for three months now, we’ve been using this handy, catch-all excuse to visitors or family members whenever she seems the slightest bit undesirable to hang out with. “Oh, she must be teething,” we’ll say as she whines and squirms in Grandpa’s arms. “Poor thing.”

A mother's guiltMy 5-month-old daughter has come down with something. Her nose is gunky, her eyes watery, her little baby cough as heartbreaking as it is cute. It’s devastating. But the worst part? It’s all my fault.

10 things you can do right now to honor Earth DaySince the first Earth Day 35 years ago, our concern for the environment has only gotten more intense, and the cause only more critical. “Going green” literally has become a household term, and our kids would be shocked to know there was ever a time when we didn’t recycle. But the scope of all that still needs to be done, and all that we’re capable of doing, can be overwhelming. Sometimes it just seems too much. I have found myself asking, do I really have time for this? Does this one measly recycled newspaper really make a difference?
Yes and yes.

A fabulous fadOne of my closest friends just brought her newborn son home from the hospital on St. Patrick’s Day -- her cherub-faced, teeny-toed, fuzzy-haired, adorable, adopted son.
