Swine flu serumIt's finally here, the vaccine to save the world! Well, not the world, but hopefully to reduce the cases of swine flu...err..I mean H1N1. Yesterday, the H1N1 vaccine was shipped around the nation. The vaccine comes in two forms: you can get poked with the flu shot or snort a nasal spray. Sorry mommies-to-be, but pregnant women cannot receive the nasal spray, along with people with compromised immune systems, you have to opt for the shot. Despite this blessed miracle vaccine, many have serious questions and concerns about receiving the vaccine since it is so new. Not only is the media still filling our heads with swine flu-related deaths and outbreaks, but now they throw the vaccine into the mix. It's great that there is a vaccine, but why instill the fear of side effects, nerve damage, and other health risks? So, what are we supposed to do; Sit around with a surgical mask on, or roll up our sleeves and get poked with this mystery serum? The only advice that I can give is to talk to your doctor about any concerns you have and just do what you think is best for the health of your family. Many parents are concerned about the additive thimerosal for their children because it's mercury-based, but the CDC claims that some contain it and others don't. Be sure to ask your doctor. Do you plan on having your young child vaccinated, or receiving the vaccination yourself? Let us know how you feel about the new vaccine and what you plan on doing to keep your family healthy. |

My daughter already got the swine flu about 2 weeks ago. It has been so bad here that the doctor's offices aren't even reporting it anymore and some doctors have told people not to even come into the office just ride it out.
My daughter was given tamiflu and it seemed to help. Another friend had it and she and her whole family were given tamiflu as a precaution.
It is hard to know what is true and not true. Our doctor told us that the CDC is not suggesting that family members take tamiflu as a precaution, my friend's doctor said they should take it as a precaution.
Back to your orginal question, I think I would have gotten my daughter the vaccination if she hadn't gotten the flu first but part of the reason I would have done that is because she works at a drug store and I think she would have been exposed more than most people.
