Swine flu, swine flu everywhereFirst there was bird flu and now we get to experience swine flu. Quick! Get a surgical mask, wash your hands, lock your doors, and don’t go outside. No, just kidding, don’t do that. Well, wash your hands, but you don’t have to quarantine yourself (unless you actually have swine flu, then stay away from me!) So, swine flu is the talk of the town...or the country...or the world. As you can guess by the name, it is a respiratory disease in pigs that rarely infects humans, until now! Lucky us. Symptoms in humans are similar to regular influenza including fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, with the occasional runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. You can’t catch the virus by eating pork products, it is air borne, so there's no escape from it *insert evil laugh here*. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Secretary of the Department Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, declared a public health emergency in the United States. Don't panic, this means funds will be released to support the public heath response, and that’s a good thing. I’m not going to take the media stance on this and scare you with the fact that 149 deaths in Mexico are believed to be related to the swine flu, or that there are over 40 cases found in the United States, 28 of those in New York City. No, I will not spread fear into the American public. But, I suppose it’s always good to know the facts, even though these numbers are minuscule compared to the 36,000 Americans who die on average per year from the complications of flu. The numbers might just be a tad higher this year, that's all. I don’t mean to make light of swine flu, but if you are smart about your health there isn’t anything to worry about. Here are some tips from the CDC on staying healthy. Also, check out our Hot Spots for Germs slideshow and how to disinfect and keep you and your home germ free.
So with the world’s first flu pandemic since 1968 and the worst U.S. economy since the Great Depression, what else do we have to look forward to? Don’t worry friends, just take good care of yourself with healthy foods, lots of rest, plenty of hand sanitizer, and possibly skipping the county fair with the kiddies this year. |

I find it interesting that in our city, the doctors are saying that if you think you have the swine flu - call in - but stay home and treat it like a regular flu. hmmm - what is the fuss then? There have been a number of interesting information on the web about the swine flu, but what I think I learned the most is that vitamin D is really important in fighting off the flu and that studies have shown that people who get the flu usually don't have enough vitamin D (from winter months without sun) so be sure to take your vitamins.
I gathered a great list of useful information about the swine flu and also added some tracking sites to see how it is spreading. I put them in this livebinder which also includes that article about vitamin d. Just click on the link below to view.

Thanks for the nice words, I am glad you enjoyed it. The amount of time that is covered on this issue is incredible, and like you said, during the perfect time -- May-sweeps! Couldn't get any better! It's not like we are living through a bubonic plague with no modern day vaccines..or are we?! :)

Wow, the media is so skewed! The only thing I can think of is that Good Morning America is more newsy therefore leans towards keeping people in fear, where The View is more relaxed and of an entertainment show and wouldn't want to take on that perspective. It really tears people in different directions on how seriously (or not) to take this issue! Plus it really messes with that doctor's credibility. The shows could have been taped on different days as well. But still, lets get a story and stick with it!
Hi I really thankful to you because you are simply greatI am very happy to post my comment in this blog. I gathered lot of information from this site. This is absolutely hilarious. I knew that swine flu was on to something... "actively targeting the core of TV's coveted adults 18-49 demographic." And that during May-sweeps! Isn't there anything holy anymore?!
Nice blog.

It is so confusing---on all channels different people have different opinions about what to do. Yesterday, I saw Dr. Oz on Good Morning America and then The View. On one show he said use a mask (just buy a cheap one don't waste your money on an expensive one)and then on The View he said don't bother to use a mask it does no good.
So one doctor gave two different pieces of advice in the span of just a couple of hours.
Dr Oz also said don't panic but then said that everyone should be making plans for if their children's schools closed and they had to be home for an extended period of time.
I think they really are causing a panic with all this information and misinformation.
I am with you, live your life, use the common sense you always use to avoid illnesses and don't panic all over the place!!

Thanks for being a voice of reason in this swine madness. I have actually turned off the news because they tell you "don't panic!" but then report it in such a way as to make you feel as though this is *the* pandemic we've been dreading.
